Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is an Indian romantic drama, directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions. The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan in the title role, with Preity Zinta as his lead actress. Starring in supporting roles are Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukerji and Boman Irani. The film also features cameos from Chris Brown, Nick Jonas & Abhishek Bachchan. A box office failure in India but a big hit in overseas markets, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham has been critically acclaimed for its portrayal of romance between two people of different religions. The film has grossed worldwide and is the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of all time. The film was remade in 2011 with Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor as lead roles. Kareena (Preity Zinta) has many short stories about her romance with Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) but her best friend Roshni is still clueless about the truth behind it. On an ordinary flight flight from Delhi to Mumbai, Kareena’s flight is hijacked by terrorists and SRK is ordered to look after her. Kareena is now stuck with SRK in Mumbai, where they both face many problems.
The music for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was composed by the Shankar Ehsaan Loy duo with lyrics penned by Mayur Puri. The soundtrack contains songs that are sung by Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal and Sonu Nigam. Lyrically, the film is inspired by "Aashiqui 2" (2000), "Ishq Vishk" (1996), "Tere Naam" (1998) and "Ongbaaz" (2000). After composing songs for films like Jodi No. 1 (2004), "Lamhe" (2004), "My Name Is Khan" (2010) and "Ishq Wala Love" (2012), Arijit Singh scored his first solo song for the film. Anand Audio released the soundtrack on 24 January 2006. The tracks were composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, lyrics by Mayur Puri
The album was well received by critics, with Shreya Ghoshal being particularly praised. Mihir Fadnavis of "Daily News and Analysis", writes : Mayur Puri also uses his trademark combination of classical music, heavy strings and soft sways to invoke certain emotions in this album, be it tenderness or yearning. He also employs classical instruments like the sitar (on the track "Chaand Taari") and sarangi (on "Aaina Kya Hai"). The soundtrack has four songs in Indian languages, two of them are in Tamil. The songs received positive response from critics with "Aaina Kya Hai" being dubbed as one of the best songs in Bollywood.
The film was released on 2 March 2006 at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. After the film's release, it performed averagely at the box office with collections amounting to . It grossed worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing Indian film of all time .
